Working hard and getting nowhere can make you feel stuck and defeated, which saps your energy and limits your ability to see the solutions and opportunities around you. It’s essential to shift from stuck to motivated as soon as possible! Let’s take a look at how far you’ve already come, practicing gratitude and celebrating wins, making yourself a priority, requesting and receiving help, and coaching to discover more of your inner guidance can give you just the boost you need!
Review What You’ve Already Accomplished
Often when we feel stuck, it’s because we have failed to notice how far we’ve come. The little victories slip by us, and we barely notice them. Even when we achieve big goals, we check the box and move on to the next one. We fixate on how far we have to go, and striving makes us feel anxious.
However, you have done more than you realize! Look back through your calendar, planner, or goal journal to refresh your memory on the myriad of small steps that you’ve been taking that ARE adding up and moving you toward the goals you’ve set for yourself! Look at how much your babes have changed over the past year- how much they’ve learned and grown with your guidance!
Sometimes it’s helpful to talk with a close friend or family member who can see your progress more easily than you can. I have one friend that I always go to when I feel stuck, and she recounts my victories so easily that sometimes when she’s talking, I’m thinking, “dang, that person sounds incredible!” and I forget for a moment that she’s talking about ME. Sometimes you have to borrow someone else’s belief in you until you can see it for yourself.
Gratitude and Celebrating Wins
The best way to inoculate yourself from feeling stuck is GRATITUDE. It’s all too easy to get swept away in the demands of motherhood and business and forget to feel grateful for the sweet moments and celebrate your wins. What you focus on expands and what you appreciate, appreciates. Gratitude empowers you to see the good, stay optimistic, notice opportunities, and best of all, enjoy the journey!
As the Law of Attraction states, like attracts like, and when you feel grateful, you bolster your energy and enthusiasm. The universe rises to meet you and gives you even MORE reasons to feel energetic and enthusiastic! It’s tempting to think, “it’s just one day, it doesn’t matter,” but remember how Annie Dillard explains it, “How we spend our days is of course how we spend our lives.”
Practicing gratitude gets easier once you’ve started, because the more you think about it, the more you see to be grateful for. It can be as little as clean water to wash your hands or shower, nourishing food to eat, or light to be able to see when the sun goes down. (I live in Alaska, so we have somewhat frequent power-outages in the winter, and they’re always an excellent reminder of little daily things that we tend to take for granted!)
When you’re pregnant, you may feel exhausted or suffer from chronic heartburn or even be stressed about more pressing medical concerns and forget the bigger picture where you’re GROWING A HUMAN. It’s truly a miracle that a microscopic sperm and egg have all the instructions for how to create a human, and you’re able to grow that human in your body for nine months!

Make Yourself a Priority
Feeling stuck can come from working too hard and eventually burning out. Society and often the culture in our own families have instilled us that we simply must work harder if we want to get ahead in life. However, this is NOT true! Working smarter will undoubtedly get you further with less effort. A foundational step for working smarter that many moms miss is that we must make ourselves a priority.
We’ve received messages subconsciously all our lives that good moms put themselves last, ipso facto, to be a good mom, we must do the same. This does not serve anyone; it’s a recipe for burnout at best and resentment at worst. It’s counter-intuitive, but the opposite is true. When we make ourselves a priority, we aren’t taking away from others; we are filling our cup so that we have more to pour into them.
A great place to start with making ourselves a priority is to engage in self-care. The act of self-care is self-love in action- we could all use a little more love in our lives. If this doesn’t inspire you to action, remember that filling your cup means you’re an example of love, energy, and happiness. You’re leading by example to show your kids how to take care of themselves, and if you’re still not convinced, self-care is essential for productivity not a reward for it!
When you take care of yourself, you are loving yourself and showing yourself that you matter. That’s going to raise your energy and vibration so that you can love others more deeply, too! As Cassandra Clare proclaims, “Love is the most powerful force in the world.” Back to the Law of Attraction, love attracts love, and as humans, the root of WHY we want anything in life is to feel love. Why not give that gift to yourself? Then it will never be taken from you. You will always be there for you.
Request and Receive Help
The evil twin of “putting yourself last” is not asking for help or not receiving support when it’s offered. There’s a pervasive lie that in addition to good moms putting themselves last, they must serve others without receiving help and most certainly never ask for it. Why do we think we have to do it all ourselves? That is not noble; it does not make you more valuable because you do more; in reality, it makes us impatient, frustrated, and overwhelmed.
The remedy? Asking for AND receiving help! The other day I was frustrated with my kids, who are 2 and 5 years old because they weren’t listening to anything I asked them to do. They were whining that I wouldn’t play Go Fish with them as I was up to my elbows in peeling shrimp for dinner. (In case that makes you think I’m rich and fancy, I’m a fisherman’s daughter and the shrimp was free.) This would have been an excellent opportunity to ask for help, but the thought didn’t even occur to me. Then my husband came upstairs when he heard me lecturing the kids and offered help, to take the kids to go downstairs and play while I finished prepping dinner. I appreciated the offer, but I declined. WHY?! Why couldn’t I receive the help he was offering? I was feeling frustrated; why wouldn’t I let myself take a break? You have a choice- be super-mom who is overwhelmed and frustrated doing all the things without any help, or be super happy mom and receive help from time-to-time.
Help isn’t always asking your husband or hiring a house-keeper- help can be finding like-minded mom entrepreneurs online who help you stay motivated, encouraged, and inspired! Sometimes it’s difficult to see how it’s possible to do it all, be an amazing mom and run a prosperous business. It’s essential to surround yourself with others who show you it’s possible and lift you up!
Internal Guidance and Coaching
Sometimes when we’re feeling stuck or unmotivated, we need someone to grab us by both wrists and pull us out of the mud! A coach is one of the best people to do this. All of the answers you seek are already inside of you. If you’ve been running around getting advice from all of the gurus and find yourself stuck in the quagmire of overwhelm and indecision, a coach can help you consult the guru of all gurus – YOU! A coach empowers you to follow your intuition, do what’s right FOR YOU, encourages you when you need it, and holds you accountable. You’ll be able to work through what’s holding you back, including yourself, and when those chains are released, you’re UNSTOPPABLE!
Any one of these tips is sure to help, but when you apply all five, you’ll find an incredible synergy that will not only get you unstuck, but catapult you into a quantum leap forward! What have you accomplished in the last year? How are you practicing gratitude daily and celebrating your wins? Do you have good self-care habits that you make a top priority? Are you noticing where you can ask for and how you can receive help when it’s offered? Do you have a trusted coach who brings out the best in you?
