It appears that some people are born with a natural tendency to be happier than others. It’s not necessarily the people who have “easy lives”, though. Those who are happy seem to have certain factors that the less happy people lack.
We’re all dealt a different hand, but we CAN each choose to play our hand to the best of our ability. I think we all know that mom who appears to have it “easy”, but there’s always more to the story. She’s probably just doing the best she can- just like us!
While you may have unhelpful natural tendencies, they are, by no means, a life-sentence. You can create a new pattern of behavior. How do these natural tendencies play into the matter of personal happiness? Here is a list of 5 natural tendencies and how they affect your feelings of well-being. Consider how one or more may be contributing to some unhappiness in your life and try making the suggested improvements!
Those who lean towards perfectionism in relation to themselves and others, have a tendency to be less happy than those who are more accepting of various outcomes. A perfectionist will achieve happiness in a job well done. However, it’s is limited due to the immediate focus on the next big project. They tend to be achievers and as soon as they achieve a desired goal, they immediately chase their next “fix”. This hamster wheel makes it difficult to enjoy the present moment and they tend to focus on the future too much. When you learn to enjoy the process rather than holding yourself to a strict set of rules, your happiness will grow.
Dreamers tend to be happy. Dreamers can often struggle with procrastination, which brings stress, there is always something to dream about again after the stress has passed.
If we are not born this way naturally, we can learn a lot from dreamers as we seek happiness in life. Think about what you want out of life and spend a little time each day enjoying the thought of that very thing. There is much joy in this simple exercise!
People who are organized have a lot going for them! However, it is possible to have too much of a good thing, even in this area. The importance is in harmony. If you’re too focused on organization then you will miss the small details that should be enjoyed along the way. Be too disorganized, on the other hand, and you will experience the frustration of yourself and others when things do not go as planned.
Trying to be organized and plan everything used to be a major stumbling block for me! When I became a mama basically nothing went as planned and I was frustrated A LOT more than necessary. That is, until I started channel some Elsa into my life and “let it go”.
Strike a happy medium, and choose to organize yourself just enough to make things work more efficiently. In other words don’t spend all of your time organizing and none of your time enjoying the benefits of your organization! Motherhood certainly adds a new spin where you have to plan for flexibility, as well!
Positivity and the ability to take the optimistic perspective absolutely affects one’s personal happiness. Some people are born with a tendency to this trait, while for others it requires tremendous effort to not live in negativity. (A good bit of this could be conditioning from your childhood and how you were raised, as well. Luckily, we have the ability to re-write those stories!)
No matter what your natural tendency, make choices that will cause you to react in a positive way and that will build your confidence in the process of life. You will find happiness comes to you naturally when you allow your energy to be transformed from negative to positive.
5. Living in the Moment
You may naturally live in the moment, but if you don’t, you can choose to. We only get this one marvelous life and finding happiness includes being fully present for as much of the journey as we can.
Some people find this easier to do, and others have to make an effort. Whatever your natural tendency, make a choice to do everything whole-heartedly so that you will have no regrets and can experience deep happiness.
We can’t choose our natural tendencies, but we can choose to re-write them. Direct your energy and thoughts toward living a happy life in the best way possible!
