A morning routine for moms starts the day off right, which is crucial because it sets the tone for the entire day! It allows you to achieve your goals and enjoy your little ones to the fullest. Tasks that are important, but not urgent, need to be accomplished in the morning before other distractions and other people’s priorities steal your focus and energy.
For example, “me time” is important, but never feels urgent… until it’s too late and you’re about to lose your mind! Don’t worry, I got you! This morning routine creates space for “me time”. The best part is you needn’t feel guilty for missing out on time with your children because they are sleeping! The best way to ensure the IMPORTANT happens daily is to have a consistent morning ritual. As Jim Rohn puts it, “If you don’t run your day, it will run you.”
The mornings when my sweet toddler came bouncing into our bedroom while I was in a dead sleep were the WORST. This was usually followed by an immediate request (okay, demand) for breakfast, to which I responded by sending him to the fridge for his pouch of yogurt. That distracted him for all of 3 minutes, and then he’d be back again. If I was extra exhausted, I’d placate him by turning on the TV (usually Baby Bum Nursery Rhymes). I’d lay there until either my ears started to bleed or I could muster the energy to get out of bed, whichever came first.
I started my day feeling groggy and guilty for allowing my son so much screen time. (I’m not anti-screen time, but I like to use it with intention.) I felt depleted because I hadn’t had a moment to myself. To be honest, these days often drift into laziness and we wouldn’t even get dressed :-/ On these occasions, my toddler ran the day instead of me. This scenario is a common one for mamas, but it can largely be avoided by starting the day a bit earlier!

1. No snooze button
- Most adult sleep cycles are approximately 90 minutes long. When you hit the snooze button on your alarm clock, (or your toddler :-P) your sleep cycle is interrupted at the wrong time… perhaps repeatedly. When your brain wakes at the wrong point in a sleep cycle, it can take 4-6 hours for your brain to function fully. This is what causes brain fog. You know, all the delights of low energy, fatigue, irritability, trouble concentrating, headaches, forgetfulness, low motivation, depression, anxiety, and confusion. How are you supposed to have an awesome day if that’s how you feel?!
- If you wake up consistently at the same time, your body and brain will learn to expect it. Your sleep cycles naturally adjust and prepare your brain to wake up so that you’re primed for a great day. (Yes this still works even if you’ve woken up A LOT throughout the night with an infant. I am living proof this morning, as our seven-month-old just had her immunizations and is teething.) Planning ahead for one or two mornings to sleep in is
greatway to catch up on sleep 😉 I say plan ahead,because deciding the morning of is a slippery slope and you don’t want to start allowing yourslefto go back to sleep. Are you convinced that this morning routine for moms will change your life? We’re just getting started!
- Our circadian rhythms are naturally affected by sunlight. Sunlight will continue to wake you up and energize you. The daylight or HappyLight (this is the one I use and this is a cheaper option) enables us to stay connected to healthy, full-spectrum light that is essential to our mental and physical well-being. It’s vital for our bodies to have this bright, healthy light first thing in the morning.
3. Hydrate & Detoxify
- The body does a lot of restorative work while you’re sleeping and dehydrates throughout the night. The human body is mostly made up of water, 60% in fact, so it’s essential to rehydrate as soon as possible. (If you wake up congested or with a dry throat this practice alone will help you to feel MUCH better!) Drink a shot of lemon juice and apple cider vinegar, (ACV as it’s commonly referred to). It has incredible health benefits and especially so if you consume it daily first thing in the morning. Drinking lemon juice on an empty stomach has many benefits, including but not limited to antibacterial and detoxifying properties. Drinking ACV on an empty stomach has a long list of benefits, as well. It will balance blood sugars, reduce inflammation, and boost your energy, to name just a few. I notice it’s much easier to make nutritious choices throughout the day when I’ve taken the lemon and ACV shot because I don’t get cravings for bad foods. I have tested this many times and every time I omit this step, I go into a sugar-craving cycle! (If a morning routine is new to you, start with just water!)
- Getting oxygen to the brain is essential for waking up and functioning at your best. This requires two things: saturate your blood with oxygen and circulate that oxygenated blood throughout your body. Generally, we don’t use our full lung capacity to breathe, so entirely expelling stale air and inhaling fresh air introduces much more oxygen to your system. Additionally, doing ten repetitions of any exercise that uses large muscle groups will move that richly oxygenated blood throughout your body to energize your body and mind. This is

5. Bulletproof coffee
- Dave Asprey has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars doing his own research. Out of this research came Bulletproof coffee. Coffee has essential nutrients in it (such as B vitamins, potassium, and manganese), as well as antioxidants. The ingredients making it bulletproof are unsalted grass-fed butter, ghee, or coconut oil. Each option has a list of health benefits.
- This combination of caffeine and fat provides a boost of energy and focus without a crash. This is entirely different from the jittery energy of drinking too much coffee. You feel energy in your body and clarity in your mind, and it lasts for hours. The caffeine naturally occurring in coffee helps transport the medium-chain-triglycerides through the blood/brain barrier by bypassing the liver entirely, thus feeding the powerful brain nutrients it needs.
- Additionally, this decadent coffee counts as breakfast! As a busy mom, squeezing in breakfast is always challenging; this is a phenomenal way to have breakfast without wasting precious kid-free time! 6. Coffee meditation
- Meditation can reduce blood pressure and improve your mental and emotional health. There’s a long list of benefits. The peaceful moment and practice of being present and observing the world around us cultivates mindfulness. I do a coffee meditation for ONE MINUTE. Some people swear by long morning meditations, but I struggle with monkey-brain and haven’t been successful with longer meditations. (I’ve given more extended meditation a solid try. I even took an eight-week course, and we practiced it for most of the hour.) By all means, try starting small and working up to longer times and see if it works well for you. I found the practice of doing a daily coffee meditation for one minute is a wonderful balance of benefits for minimal effort. You say lazy, I say efficient 😉
- This is one of my favorite parts of a morning routine for moms because we get to enjoy HOT coffee! That’s right! Does that EVER happen if the kids are awake?! Not in our house.
7. Gratitude Journaling & Smiling
- You want to start your day with gratitude because you prove to yourself that you have a great life and that makes you feel good. This part of your morning routine enables you to notice the many things that you have to be grateful for throughout the rest of the day. When you start your day with gratitude, it allows you to feel positive throughout your morning and throughout your day. Gratitude improves your mental and physical health in addition to other remarkable benefits. Additionally, like attracts like so if you have an energy of abundance, you’ll attract abundance.
- Many tremendously successful people, like Oprah, swear by a morning routine! Your mind impacts your body, and your body influences your mind. As Oprah said, “I live in the space of thankfulness — and for that, I have been rewarded a million times over. I started out giving thanks for small things, and the more thankful I became, the more my bounty increased. That’s because — for sure — what you focus on expands.” When you focus on the goodness in life, you create more of it. When you smile for genuine reasons, your body releases feel-good hormones. Find things to be grateful for and SMILE about them to feel an extreme boost in happiness!
- You can direct your subconscious to work toward the goals that your conscious mind has set. If you aren’t able to precisely articulate your goals in your conscious mind, your subconscious mind cannot understand them. Ludwig Wittgenstein said something to the effect of “the limitations of our language are ultimately the limitations of our lives.” Wow, huh? Better figure out exactly how to define your goals! An affirmation is essentially stating your goals. When you start your day, your brain opens loops for the tasks that need to be completed.
All dayyour brain will continue to search for things that align with your affirmations and move you toward them.
- Unfortunately, this also holds if you don’t actively set your priorities. If your morning routine is checking email/texts/social media, you’re accepting other people’s priorities before your own. If you open up an email and someone asks you to solve their problems, your brain will be looking all day for ways to solve THAT person’s problems. Your brain will be nagging you to respond. Responding to other people’s needs rarely helps you become more mindful, nor moves you any closer to your goals.
- A morning routine for moms is essential because when else could we possibly take a step back to clear our minds and think about what we want beyond that pile of dishes to be clean?!
- Have you ever had a conversation with a friend, and you can’t for the life of you remember the name of the actor in that movie? Even though you move on with the conversation without another thought about it, you think of the name as you’re drifting off to sleep?! That’s the power of the subconscious; it works to solve problems on a deeper level
thatthe conscious mind is not aware of.
- As Jim Rohn said, “Success is not to be pursued, it is to be attracted by the person you become.” Personal development gives clarity to what you want in life, how to achieve it, and enables you to enjoy today to its fullest. It boosts skills and strengths, which improves effectiveness. Additionally, it sharpens focus, which provides motivation and satisfaction as well as resilience when things don’t go as you would like. It forces you out of your comfort zone which enables you to do the hard things that others aren’t willing to do. Personal development cultivates self-awareness and empowers you to improve and strengthen relationships, which makes them more fulfilling. Personal growth builds confidence and happiness. It enables you to feel that you have an internal locus of control, an empowering and satisfying feeling. Life isn’t something that happens to you; you can shape it. Personal development gives you the tools to do so. During a morning routine for moms is the perfect time to design a life we love.
10. Eat your frog
- As Mark Twain said “If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” The frog is that one thing you have on your to-do list for the day that is important and you have no motivation to do and therefore are most likely to procrastinate on. Sometimes a frog isn’t necessarily something that you dread doing; it can be an important thing that you know you’ll struggle to fit into your day. Eating the frog means it’s done first and you don’t think about it for the rest of the day, instead of spending energy procrastinating on it. Brian Tracy wrote a whole book about this.
- What’s the most important task? What is the one thing that could make a significant difference in your life either today or in the future that aligns with your life goals? There are four immediate benefits of accomplishing this task first thing in the morning.
- You do your best work with a fresh brain
- It’s complete before anything else steals your attention
- You get a boost from doing something important and difficult (which will make you want to continue checking tasks off your list), AND
- The job is done and over with. You don’t waste precious mental energy dreading it throughout the day, only to possibly (likely) never complete it at all
Why a Morning Routine for Moms is Essential
This morning routine for moms has fundamentally shifted my life for the better. It helps me to be present throughout the day because I’m not worried about trying to get my most important thing done for the day. It’s already done and I know I have tomorrow morning, too. As Dieter F. Uchtdorf said “Life is not only meant to be appreciated in retrospect . . . There is something each day to embrace and cherish.” This morning routine enables you to embrace and cherish each day. You can take care of yourself so that you can take even better care of your family. It sets you up for success in making progress toward your goals.
