My second pregnancy has been different than my first in many ways. The most significant difference is that my attention is now divided between the baby growing in my belly and my toddler who constantly demands my attention. I no longer have time to research my growing baby’s milestones and create weekly pregnancy updates for friends and family. Our son was our first pregnancy experience and our daughter will be our last. It’s easy to get caught up in the annoyances of pregnancy (when will the bloody nose, heartburn, and feeling huge ever end?!) but it’s important to be grateful for this beautiful miracle as it unfolds. I want to take the time to notice and appreciate the little things before it’s too late and I realize I missed too much.
1. Feeling Baby Move
One of the best reminders of life growing inside your belly is feeling the sweet baby move. Each time she moves, you can picture how she’s positioned and imagine what she’s doing in there. At my last ultrasound, baby girl was exactly in the position I’d imagined. I’ve been feeling a lot of movement very low. Come to find out, she is indeed in a breech position, for now anyway. I guess I can look forward to kicks to the rib-cage when/if she decides to flip around! Even when I have a busy day, I still take time at night to lay still and enjoy each and every twitch as I drift to sleep.
2. Stretchy Pants
Almost all maternity clothing fits well no matter what. No more tight jeans ruining your day! In fact, the more that little gut sticks out, the more proud and fortunate you feel. Even if your belly is bigger thanks to eating too much the night before, no one knows the difference. As someone who has struggled with my weight all my life, especially with having a thicker middle, letting it all hang out was so much FUN! The only sad part is knowing such a wonderful life filled with stretchy clothing on the daily and feeling obligated to give it up a few months after baby has arrived. I wish I could forever live in stretchy pants.
Oh the things you accomplish with cleaning and home organization projects when the nesting phase of pregnancy hits! I don’t know where the drive and motivation comes from, but I dive into projects head-on and have the stamina to actually finish them. I wish I could bottle-up these spectacular nesting hormones and save some for later!
4. People are Generally Nicer
Even strangers seem to notice little ways that they can help, like returning the cart at the grocery store, or just offering a smile. Some people who may have ignored you in the past are suddenly inclined to strike up a conversation. Conversation with other moms is suddenly becomes easy; every moment of pregnancy and motherhood is new and something you want to talk about with other moms! (That’s exactly why I started this blog, I can’t get enough of the encouraging and supportive community that can come with motherhood!)
Seeing images of your developing baby is incredible. In early ultrasounds, it’s strange to see how much the baby is moving and realize that you don’t feel any of it. Mid-pregnancy it’s amazing how you can see baby’s little features, even from a profile picture. Later in pregnancy, especially if you’re able to have some 3D images, it’s astounding to get such a detailed sneak-peek of baby’s sweet face!
6. Feeling Productive While Napping
At any given moment if you feel like you’re not being productive or like your waddling body is slowing you down, stop and ponder for a moment. Even while you are sleeping, your body is building life with millions of cells rapidly dividing. Next time you feel sluggish, remember how hard your body is working to build a healthy baby in 40 short weeks. You are creating a whole ‘nother human! No wonder you feel so tired!
7. Incredible Hair & Nails
I’m sure it’s a combination of prenatal vitamins and the pregnancy hormones, but my goodness, pregnancy blesses us with luscious, fast-growing, thick hair and fast-growing, strong, beautiful fingernails! Enjoy it while you can because for some mamas, that hair falls out in alarming amounts soon after baby is born.
Need I say more? Ah yes, periods are an incredibly annoying part of womanhood and pregnancy is a much-enjoyed break from that routine!
Nothing tops how EVERYTHING changes the instant you become a parent. No matter how much you try to prepare in advance, everything will change and in the most unexpected ways. Until that time, the daydreaming opportunities are endless; what will life be like in a few months? It’s a wild feeling knowing that you have no idea what those changes will actually be. The only thing that you do know is that life as you know it will be entirely different very soon and it’s a blast to cogitate on the possibilities.
10. Excuse to Eat & Sleep as Much as You Want
Eating for two is an excellent excuse to eat dessert and have second helpings. Even if it’s a tiny person that you’re eating for, you’re still eating for two. Rest is also extremely important while growing a baby. Don’t feel guilty about the chores you are missing in order to get some extra rest. After all, your body is working very hard around the clock. In fact, a mama should feel proud that she’s doing the right thing by taking a nap instead of scrubbing toilets 🙂
While there are some things about pregnancy that can be annoying, focusing on the positive beautiful things can make all the difference! For most of us, pregnancy is a short time in our lives. Enjoy your healthy glowing and growing body and all of the marvelous things that it’s doing for you and your baby! I hope you’ve enjoyed this fun list of things to enjoy in pregnancy 😀
